School Development

December 21st 2011

Dear Parents, Guardians and members of the school community

As you are aware, the Executive Committee has been considering a request from the Department of Education to expand our school. We have consulted the school community for your views on the proposal, and have received valuable inputs from parents, staff, students and the Board of Management, as well as from Educate Together. We have also had extensive and detailed discussions with the Department of Education, culminating in a lengthy meeting between a delegation of Department officials and representatives of NKETS Executive and the Board of Management.

Having exhaustively examined all the facts and perspectives on the proposal, we are pleased to let you know that the Executive has voted unanimously in favour of the expansion of NKETS. The Executive is fully satisfied that, as a point of principle, increasing the availability of primary school places based on an Educate Together model is something that we should proactively aspire to, and is in line with the school purpose and ethos. We also see it as important for our school to respond positively to what is a clearly-identified need in the Celbridge area. Furthermore, we are convinced that an expansion to a 2-stream school gives us a significant opportunity to further enhance our school, building on and strengthening what is a highly-cherished school ethos.

We intend to hold an information meeting at the earliest practicable opportunity to brief you more extensively on the plans. In the meantime, we will continue to liaise with the Department and with other authorities to advance the process. We thank you for your support during our consultation process, and look forward to engaging with you over the coming months as we progress with this exciting development.

About the School Patron

In Educate Together schools such as NKETS, the role of the Trustee, or School Patron, is fulfilled by the school community - including parents, teachers and other parties, who form themselves into a Limited Company.

NKETS Ltd. was established in 1993 to fulfill the role of School Patron. The Company (NKETS Ltd.) fulfills its patronage role through the election of an Executive Committee, which is the management board of the patron body. The Executive Committee is made up of 11 members who are elected by the membership of the company at our Annual General Meeting. Membership of the company is open to parents, teachers, and interested parties and is by payment of an annual subscription. In becoming a member, you will have the right to vote at the A.G.M. and to elect the Executive Committee, which will represent you as a parent when policy or long-term decisions for the school are made. It will also give you the opportunity to go forward for election onto the Executive Committee if you so wish, once you have been a member for twelve months.

The Constitution of NKETS Ltd. states that "the primary function of the Executive is to represent the collective views of the membership on all matters pertaining to the N.K.E.T.S, subject to the provisions of the constitution."(Article 2, Paragraph 2.8.3)

The main responsibilities of the Patron include:

  • The school purpose and ethos
  • The development and upkeep of the school assets
  • The appointment and support of the Board of Management
  • Financial and legal matters
  • The supervision of staff appointments in accordance with departmental regulations.

In line with the Constitution of NKETS Ltd., an Annual General Meeting is held each year to elect a new Executive Committee and to deal with motions from the membership.

School Ethos Initiative 2011 - 2012

The Executive is pleased to announce the launch of an important new initiative for 2011 - 2012.

The objectives of the initiative are a) to provide an opportunity for meaningful engagement by the school community in examining and re-stating our school ethos, and b) to provide the Executive with up-to-date information on the views of the school community regarding school ethos. This will inform the Executive in the governance of school ethos, and will enable us to more effectively fulfil our role in representing the views of the membership on matters pertaining to NKETS. This exercise can also help us collectively as a school community to more effectively promote our school within the local area, and to participate in wider local and national debates about future schooling needs. Most importantly, we hope that the School Ethos Initiative will help to open up new channels of engagement between the Executive and the school community that will allow for vibrant and effective participation by the school community in relation to school ethos.
